Musicologica Austriaca – Journal for Austrian Music Studies (MusAu) is the official peer-reviewed journal of the Austrian Musicological Society (ÖGMW), the largest association of music scholars and corresponding institutions in Austria.
Scope
Recognizing Austria's significant role in the history of Western music, MusAu focuses on Austrian music studies and on research related to this cultural region. It furthermore serves as an outlet for research conducted by scholars working in Austria, irrespective of topical and thematic orientation. Emphasis is placed on methodological cooperation between all musicological sub-disciplines as well as on the integration of related fields. Finally, MusAu aims in particular to encourage its authors to use the entire range of technical options available.
Policy
As an internationally oriented open access journal, MusAu provides all its content for free (under a CC-BY license). It has an editorial board consisting of first-class scholars from around the world. To ensure consistently high-quality standards of scholarship, we are committed to the COPE Code of Conduct for publication ethics and to the BOAI (Budapest Open Access Initiative) declaration.
Although MusAu is published and financed by the national association of music scholars in Austria (ÖGMW), it is open to authors (and readers) from around the world. Authors do not need to be a member of ÖGMW. Furthermore, MusAu does not impose any charges for manuscript submission and for publishing.
Publication schedule
MusAu publishes up to 18 articles, topical special issues, and extensive book reviews per year on an ongoing basis. Stand-alone articles and proposals for special issues can be submitted at any time.
MusAu history
Published annually in printed form between 1977 and 2013 (click here for an overview and the digitized issues), MusAu may be considered one of Austria’s leading musicological journals. Thanks to a generous grant from the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), the ÖGMW has been able to relaunch its yearbook in order to actively enhance its international reach. Since the new website went online in early 2015, MusAu has operated as an online-only, open-access journal. Former editors of MusAu online are Wolfgang Fuhrmann (2015-2018), Dominik Šedivý (2015-2018), Alexander Wilfing (2018-2024), and Vasiliki Papdopoulou (2018-2024).
Organizational structure
The Austrian Musicological Society (ÖGMW) is media owner and publisher of MusAu. The MusAu editorial team is nominated and advised by the executive board of the ÖGMW. The editors independently manage the administration of MusAu. In compliance with the COPE Code of Conduct, the ÖGMW does not interfere with the editorial freedom of the editors and the editorial board. Editors and editorial board members do not receive any remuneration.
